Frequently asked questions

Please email us at team@synth.solar if you can’t find your answer below.

How is Synth different from other solar and battery companies?

• We stay involved for the life time of your system. We offer Monitoring Only or Performance Partnership plans to actively manage the system long term, rather than fitting and walking away.

We build our own tech. Most installers buy off-the-shelf monitoring; we've built ours from scratch, including SunMapper for site assessment, the battery sizing calculator, and SunDial for live performance dashboards. That gives us, and you, a much sharper view of how every system is actually performing.

We're commercial-first. That means feasibility studies off your half-hourly data, planning and DNO applications, asset finance and PPAs, and hardware chosen per site rather than per supplier deal, all in-house.

In recognition of our innovation, in 2025 Octopus Energy named us Most Innovative Business from their Trusted Partners from over 650 UK companies

Do you do commercial solar?

Yes. Commercial is our focus. We design, install, and monitor solar and battery systems for businesses, agricultural sites, and large estates across the UK.

We work with innovative clients like Ember where we installed solar on a neighbours property to power their electric buses in Scotland

Do you do residential solar?

Generally no. We've paused new residential installs to focus on commercial, agricultural, and large estate projects. If you've come to us about a home install, we can refer you to installation partners we've worked with before who'll be happy to help.

Do you do flat roof installs?

Yes, regularly. We do high quality ballasted installs so the roof doesn't need to be penetrated. An example of a flat roof project we did is here

Do you do ground-mounted arrays?

Yes. Ground-mounted systems work well where you've got land to spare, no shade issues, and want to maximise generation independent of roof orientation. Get in touch with the site details and we'll talk through the right approach.

Do you do solar carports?

Yes. The structure, grid connection, and EV charging integration vary site by site, so get in touch and we'll design for your specifics.

Do you do agricultural and barn installs?

Yes. A lot of our work sits on farms, agricultural buildings, and rural estates. See Tathwell, Kings Nympton, and Pytchley for examples.

Do you do battery-only projects?

Yes. If you've already got solar, a standalone battery can shift consumption to cheaper tariff windows and protect against export caps. See Larkstoke, where we added a 215 kWh battery to complement an existing 250 kW solar array.

Do you renovate existing solar systems (e.g. FIT systems)?

Yes. It’s important to maintain FIT systems as they provide a great return=. Renovations make up a significant share of our work, especially where an older system is underperforming or where adding a battery would unlock more value from existing solar. We can also attach it to our remote monitoring when renovating.

Do you upgrade existing FIT systems?

Yes, with care. Replacing an inverter is usually no issue. Adding panels, changing inverter sizing, or adding a battery has to be declared to your FIT licensee so your payments aren't put at risk. We can handle the paperwork and the conversation with your supplier so the upgrade stays fully compliant.

Do you work across the UK?

Yes. We've delivered projects from Aberdeen (powering electric buses for Ember) down to Devon, and most points in between. See the full spread on our projects page.

Do you install in London?

Yes. Many installers will not take on London projects because of access, parking, and scaffolding complexity, but a meaningful share of our work sits in and around the capital.

Do you provide design-only services?

Yes we can provide design-only services. Every system is engineered around the specific site, consumption profile, and goals of the project rather than dropped in from a template.

Do you do site surveys and feasibility studies?

Yes. For most projects we run a physical site survey before locking in the final design. For larger or more complex jobs, we bring the installation team along too so technical feasibility is confirmed early. We can also run a desk-based feasibility study off your half-hourly data and bills if you want a view before committing to a survey.

Do you handle planning and DNO applications?

Yes. We can manage planning permission where it applies, and we run G98, G99, and G100 applications with the relevant Distribution Network Operator. Where export limits or grid upgrades come into play, we work through the options with you.

Do you build your own tech?

Yes. Our monitoring software, customer dashboards, and analytics tools are all built in-house. That includes our SunMapper solar assessment tool, battery sizing calculator, and SunDial live performance dashboard. It's a big part of why we can offer a different level of visibility post-install than most installers.

What hardware do you use?

We work with carefully chosen partners across panels, inverters, and batteries. Specifics depend on the site, the tariff, and the size of the system. We've built all of our technology to be brand-agnostic and recommend what fits the job, not what's easiest to procure.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We work with two main routes:

Asset finance lets you spread the capital cost over a fixed term while owning the system from day one - solar projects gener

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) mean a third party funds, owns, and maintains the system on your roof, and you buy the energy it generates at a fixed rate, usually below grid prices.

Which is right depends on your tax position, balance sheet, and how much capex you want to commit. We can talk you through both.

Why is your website black?

We like how it looks, but also an OLED screen at mid brightness uses 50% less energy showing a mostly dark screen vs a mostly light screen.

What is a typical project for you?

A typical Synth project runs 6 to 8 weeks from deposit to commissioning. We take a 25% deposit to lock in the install date and start equipment procurement, and a Synth project manager is on site from the day before install to manage scaffolding, deliveries, and site coordination. All our projects have a dedicated project manager who will be your main point of contact.

What size projects do you take on?

Most of our work sits between 30 kW and 1 MW, though we've delivered both smaller and larger projects where the brief makes sense.

Can you help with grant applications?

Yes. We've supported customers through Rural Payments Agency grants and other regional schemes. See Tathwell, where we paired the install with a successful RPA grant application.

Do you do maintenance and servicing?

Yes. Every install comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee, and we offer two ongoing options:

Monitoring Only, where we keep an eye on performance and flag issues, and

Performance Partnership, where we take active responsibility for output. Get in touch and we'll talk through what fits your site.

Will you take over an existing system?

Yes, in many cases. If you've got solar or batteries installed by someone else and would like a more responsive monitoring or performance partner, we can review the system, add it to our monitoring platform, and take it from there.

What warranties come with the system?

You get the manufacturer warranties on panels (typically 25 years or more on power output), inverters, and batteries (typically 10 years), plus our 2-year workmanship guarantee on the install. The full warranty pack is part of your handover, alongside the EIC, MCS certificate where applicable, and equipment spec sheets.

Do I need a battery?

It depends on your consumption profile and tariff. A battery typically pays back fastest on sites with significant evening or weekend load, time-of-use tariffs, or export caps that limit what you can sell back to the grid.

Try our battery sizing calculator for a quick view of the right size for your site and the likely payback.

What credentials do you have?

We are Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS) Certified for Solar (NAP-74234); We have 5.0* rating on Google - all reviews from our existing customers. The 2025 Octopus Energy Trusted Partners Awards named us Most Innovative Business from over 650 UK companies.

Are you MCS accredited?

Yes. Our MCS registration number is NAP-74234, valid for projects under 50 kW. Above that threshold MCS Certification does not apply, and our commercial work is governed by the relevant electrical and construction standards instead.
